At Anglia clocks we are able to offer repair and restoration of quarter chiming clocks and hour and half hour striking clocks. These clocks fall into the category of mass produced clocks usually dating from the early 1900s onwards. Often shunned by clock repairers and berated by the antique trade these clocks often have great sentimental value to the owner and produce a pleasant sounding chime on the quarters and the hours but are very often the costly repairs are misunderstood by the customer and so it is hoped that this page will be both informative and will stimulate interest in having these clocks repaired.
1. it is necessary to identify the clock you have. As a general rule of thumb your clock will have one winding hole in the dial for every function. One for just a timepiece, two and the clock will strike the hours and half hours and three for full quarter chiming with hour strike. The two illustrated above both have quarter chiming.
2. you need to identify the maker of the clock-this is usually stamped on the back of the movement and occasionally on the dial.Makers of these clocks included "Smiths" "Smiths Enfield" "Enfield" "Garrard" "Elliott" "Bentima" and so on.Along with the maker you need to identify how many chime bars are in the back-normally four or five will do a Westminster chime and eight or more will give a multi-chime
3. we need to know if the clock is a mantle, wall hanging or floor standing clock.Along with this information does the clock have springs or weights ? Usually spring driven clocks are wound with a key from the front through holes in the dial.Weight driven clocks will have visible weights somewhere-usually viewable from the front-these clocks often have a chain to pull for winding.
4. Now a simple call to Michael Guiver at Anglia Clocks is all that is needed - it might sound like this " I have a chiming clock with three winding holes that is a mantle clock it is made by Smiths Enfield and is spring driven - can you fix it for me ?
